CR10
2014
Dubbed Louisa after our long standing technicians new baby daughter, CR10 is the newest addition to the family. Being the lightest, fastest and most aggressive looking car in Cardiff Racing's lineage we look forward to the competition.
Louisa was the earliest completed car stemming from the fact work started in August - it was the first completed chassis in Europe! This gave us an advantage. Design, manufacture and testing could all be completed with much more developed ideas and hence has lead to this new and improved car.
The main areas of change are the 3D printed nose cone which has reduced production costs 10 fold, a new plenum design increasing the air flow into the engine and a brand new tailored dash and steering wheel built in house. Other worthy notes are the new air dampers - creating huge weight savings and infinitely variable suspension - and the exclusion of all carbon composites in a bid to use flax as the green alternative.
Overall the team really focussed on reliability with lots of time for testing and ironing out problems before the event. This resulted well with the best result to date. Louisa finished 6th in the 22km endurance event, beating the overall event winners Delft University of Technology from The Netherlands who currently hold the world record for the fastest accelerating electric car. Elsewhere the team continued with the hard work in both the dynamic and static events to overall achieve 8th place at Formula Student UK. Being the best team without an aerodynamics package and coming 3rd out of the UK teams.
Our continued gratitude goes to all our sponsors as without them this would not have been possible. The team looks forward to next year's competition as work on our new car starts straight away!
